Let's talk about shrinkage

Yesterday, I got the most darling pictures of my parents' new puppy -- a teacup size Maltese-Pomeranian mix name Gracie. She's the cutest thing you ever saw, and I'm on the wrong computer, so I can't download the pictures from my email. :(

Anyway, naturally, I called each family member in the office to duly ooh and ahh over the puppy, which they did. And then after a moment, dh said, "Why is it that as people get older, their dogs shrink?"

"Huh?"

"Their dogs are getting smaller."

Hmm...let's see....

When I was a kid, Dad started us on a Saint Bernard.

Then we moved on to a quite large version of a cockapoo.

Then we had a series of beagles.

Then dad and stepmom had sweet, sweet Kelly, a Maltese.

And finally their Pomeranian-Maltese puppy in a teacup.

This was the closest thing I could find to the darling -- it's on a mouse pad, which is appropriate since she's about as big as a mouse. LOL.

Sorry Dad and Lynda, she really is sweet. But I think dh might have a point. Your dogs are shrinking. :)

Have your animals gotten bigger or smaller? What about you? I'm definitely shrinking.

Wild Turkeys

No, no, no. Not the booze. Get your mind out of the gutter.

The birds -- the kind we eat on Thanksgiving. They've taken up residence in our yard, it seems. It's strange, because the dogs go outside and don't seem to notice they're there. DUH. Guess they aren't bird dogs. My dad apparently thinks we should "nab" ourselves one of the turkeys to serve with stuffing and gravy. My stepmom suggests we start watching where we walk. LOL.

Aren't they cool though? We've counted 16.

Kids Again

Saturday, dh and I went to a birthday party at a downtown club. It was on the 2nd story of this cool old brick building..

When we drove up outside, we noticed these great black and white movies (like Charlie Chaplin movies) playing on the side of the building across from the club -- so the movie was like 2 or 3 stories high. We both thought the movie was awesome.

So, we go to the party, have a drink, we're feeling pretty good, and I decide to check out the projector that's showing these films -- it's in the next room over (both rooms face the street).

I broke it.

I touched something on the machine and the wall of the building across the way went dark. I say "Psst...dh...OH MY GOD, I've broken the movie."

He laughs.

"No, really, damnit! I broke it!"

He laughs more. So, anyway, we start giggling as we take turns trying to fix it, with one of us on the "lookout" for anyone coming our way. Finally, we get the movie going again and run away from the machine like little kids making off from the dime store with stolen candy. For the remainder of the time at the party, we'd look out the window, see the movie playing, and laugh.

Ooh -- I should do a "secret" postcard and send it in! (Though I suppose it's not a secret anymore). LOL.

Do you and your spouse or friends ever act like little kids?

K-TEL

My poor daughter has to get up about 5:55 to make her 6:55 bus. At age 11, this isn't always easy -- this morning being one of those times.

So, I laid down next to her and started to sing seventies tunes. Those fuddy duddy songs that were on the K-TEL album my father bought.

Jim Croce songs: Bad, bad, Leroy Brown. Operator. Time in a Bottle.

Carly Simon: You're so Vain.

I was part way through Carly's Anticipation when Roxie finally said, "Okay, okay, I'm getting up."

LOLOL.

I've Got a Secret

Remember that show? For a variation on that theme . . .

The other day, Mel posted a link to this site, and for those of you haven't visited her way cool blog, I wanted to post the link to "Secrets" here.

Check it out -- it's different and surprising.

And funny. There was a person whose secret is that they love to pop bubblewrap. A virtual bubblewrap popping link was included for those of you with the same addiction.

I'm going to think on this today -- on my secret. Maybe I'll get enough courage to send in a postcard too. Do you have a secret?

Storyteller Slut

I don't know if this happens to other writers, but I have this problem -- I'm a storyteller slut. I can't seem to stay loyal to one story, to one set of characters. Oh, I love them all, but I tend to stray.

My first story was of a man named Jack and his long lost love, Elizabeth. I lived with these people and their story (which I had in my head from beginning to happy ending) for a long time before deciding to write it down. But when putting it to paper, the brother, Michael, wouldn't quit flirting with me. Yep, I dumped Jack for Michael and began writing his story.

Next, a Crimean War hero named Gerard kept giving me The Look. I tried to remain faithful to Michael and Jerilyn. I really did. But The Look pulled me too strongly, and I entered into an affair with my Victorian story. I'm working on that now. And, like the other two, the entire story -- save some details -- is in my head and just needs to be put to paper. I love this story. Love the characters.

And yet...

The first week of KIA, I cheated and wrote a short story for a contest with a Nov. 1st deadline. Yes, I felt guilty. But I'm back where I should be, trying to be faithful again.

Now, I have a series of time travel stories in my head that would be awesome to write. I AM trying to ignore the temptation, and so far I've been successful and haven't been seduced away. I MUST remain loyal to my Victorian until I've typed "The End."

Any advise? Does this ever happen to you?

How I spent my Saturday...

Well, after we did our familial duty, spending the morning with 91-year old cousin Gladys (who is a delightful lady), we stopped at our favorite spot out in the valley...thank GOD they don't have one nearer us. Because Krispy Kreme doughnuts are heaven on earth.

The kids each picked a donut that they followed from it's birth at the beggining of the conveyor belt, through the little oven that involves several trips up and down through a chain and pulley system. Next, they float through oil on one side (I never said it wasn't extremely fattening), then they're flipped over so they can float some more in oil, browning the flip side.

Finally, the doughnuts ride underneath a shower of glaze. Wow. A very thin young man (I know--it doesn't make sense that he has no body fat) at the end of the belt boxes them. Some end up in the glass showcase (we chose a dozen "assorted").

The employees saw my kids follow their doughnuts from beginning to end and thought it was so cute, they pulled out those specific ones and gave them to them! Isn't that way cool!

Tonight we go out with some friends -- to a healthy vegetarian restaurant. Shh...don't tell our pals that we gorged on Krispy Kremes all day. LOL.

What are your weekend plans?
